Jennifer Hudson’s Winnie Portrayal

Jennifer Hudson’s film portrayal of Winnie Mandela, the self-asserting wife of anti-apartheid hero, Nelson Mandela, has raised some eyebrows amongst South African communities. The 2007 Oscar winner for best supporting female actor for the film “Dreamgirls” is set to headline the latest Darrel J. Roodt biopic entitled “Winnie.” But despite the Oscar buzz, many have questioned Hudson’s credibility to give justice to the role for the mere fact that she is non-South African. The plot thickens when Winnie Mandela, herself, was angered by the biopic, claiming that she was never informed of any plans to create a movie based on her life. The Clint Eastwood film, “Invictus,” which has been a recent hit in local theaters stars Morgan Freeman playing Nelson Mandela. Freeman, however, is also a non-South African. So why make a big deal about Hudson playing the lead role in “Winnie”? Only the sharp-tongued knows.
